Summer, sun and BIKING... in Marche region

Apr 14, 2021 9:00:00 AM / by Elisabeth Ernst

One of my very favourite ways to discover a new country or region is by bicycle. This is how I discovered a part of Peru, Northern Germany, Denmark or the Croatian coast from Trogir to Dubrovnik. Also, I like mountain biking on the gentle hills of my home region or a biking tour along a river. To move and to enjoy region and its people and culture at my very own pace... today this kind of travel is called slow travelling. In the hidden gem of Italy, Marche region, there are also several biking routes to discover the region - from the sea to the hills to the mountains and back. Let me tell you more!

Cycling in Marche region means to choose from about 1.582 biking km. In the past years, exactely in 2019, there were developed six so-called 'rebirth' cycling routes, whereas each of these circuits offer three circles that can be combined with each other.

Five of those 'rebirth' circuits are starting at the coast and lead into the inner land, passing interesting places:

  • Pesaro and surrounding - North Marche

The most Northern rebirth circuit starts in the medieval town and castle of Gradara at the boarder to the region Emilia Romagna. It is the with 138 - 131 - 136 km the biggest cycling circuit in Marche region. The path leads into the inner land passing Pergola with the bronze statues, the abbey of Santa Croce, the UNESCO world heritage site and birthplace of Michelangelo - Urbino - and then back at the seaside Fano and Pesaro.

  • Ancona and surrounding - central Marche

Ancona, the capital and most central point of the regional coastline is the starting and end point of the second circuit leading in 85 -80 -85 km from the sea to the inner land and back. The route passes by Loreto - a part of Vatican and home of the Holy House with the black madonna- , the capital of the local Verdicchio white wine - Jesi-, Osimo with its underground city, Fabriano - the city of paper production -, and the Grotte di Frasassi cave where just the first hall is bigger than the immense Duomo of Milan.

  • Macerta and surrounding - Southern central Marche

This tour starts at the seaside in Porto Sant Elpidio, the mekka of outlets and shoes. The route takes the cyclists in 44 - 68 - 109 km to Macerata with its amazing open air arena 'Sferisterio', to the Fiastra abbey with its enormous parks, the church San San Giusto in Valfornace and to the wall paintings in the grotto of Corridonia.

  • Fermo and surrounding - the Northern South Marche

The tour around Fermo brings the cyclists in 92 - 75 - 87 km to castles, archeological places and monasteries. So, the tour leads through places like the charming village of Servigliano, Amandola in the Sibillini mountains, Monte Rinaldo with its archeological area La Cuma, Fermo or the old and medieval village of Montefalcone Appennino with placed on a rock with an impressive fortress.

  • Ascoli and surrounding - the South Marche

The most Southern rebirth circuit of the Marche starts in Grottammare, a part of the Riviera delle Palme. In 86 - 75 - 71 cycling kms the sportsmen and -women may discover Ascoli Piceno with its marble main square and the ascolane olives (filled and fried olives), the church of San Francesco in Venarotta and the Church of Santa Maria in Monte Monaco. Once back at the seaside in Grottammare, a visit in the old part of the village - Grottammare Alta - is absolutely worth a visit. Small, colourful and vibrant streets are waiting for the visitors as well as a super romantic view onto the sea....
